R Clarke Poem for String Quartet,
L van Beethoven String Quartet No 1 in F Major Op 18 No 1
E Rubbra Amoretti Op 43
The dynamic combination of the outstanding Carducci Quartet and compelling tenor, Robin Tritschler, bring us an evening concert from St Jude-on-the-Hill, London which includes the romantic poetic setting of British composer, Edmund Rubbra’s expressive Amoretti cycle. With text by Edmund Spenser, the work is a demonstration of the composer’s love for his wife Antoinette for whom he also wrote a violin sonata. Another English work, Rebecca Clarke’s Poem for String Quartet features on the programme this evening. New to many of our music lovers, this work has been described as “a lovely, generously expressive, finely made composition in the romantic tradition.” (San Francisco Chronicle). Few chamber music festivals would be complete without Beethoven whose string quartets over 200 years later remain to the fore of the genre. On this occasion we look forward his First String Quartet played by the exhilarating Carduccis.
